You can transfer PS4 games and save data to PS5. Here's how!

Before you start playing these PS5 games on your shiny new PS5 console, you may want to play some of your backwards compatible games first. The PS5 supports thousands of PS4 games through backward compatibility, but given its limited 825GB internal SSD, it’s easy to run out of storage space. We guide you through transferring digital games and storing data over a wireless network with an external HDD so you can start playing.

How to transfer PS4 games and save data to PS5

Transfer games via network

  1. Make sure both your PS4 and PS5 are turned on and connected to your Wi-Fi.
  2. Log in same account on both consoles.
  3. On your PS5, go for it Settings at the top right of the control panel next to your account icon.
  4. choose System.

  5. highlight System software and select Data transfer to the right.

  6. choose Continue when it asks if you want to transfer data.

  7. Allow your data to transfer in the background. It should give you an estimate of how long the process will take.

Transfer games from an HDD

  1. On your PS4, go to Settings.
  2. choose Storage.
  3. choose System storage.
  4. choose Application.

  5. Highlight the game you want to transfer via USB and click on the hamburger Options button on your controller.
  6. choose Move to expanded warehouse if you have a compatible external hard drive connected.

  7. Turn on your PS5.
  8. Connect your USB into one of the USB ports on either the front and back of the PS5.

  9. It needs your games automatic show up at your library.

Transfer saved data from a USB

  1. On your PS4, go to Settings.
  2. choose Administration of applications and save data.

  3. choose Save data and system storage.
  4. choose Copy to USB storage (make sure you have a USB drive connected).

  5. Insert the plug USB drive for your PS5.
  6. On your PS5, go for it Settings.
  7. choose Saved data and game / app settings.
  8. choose Saved data (PS4).

  9. choose USB drive and copy your saved data over.

We recommend playing any PS4 game on an external hard drive so you can save your SSD storage to run PS5 games. Because PS5 games can only be run and stored on the internal SSD right now, use as much space as possible for them.

You can only save and run PS4 games from an external hard drive, but that’s probably the best option right now. With PS5 games taking up its internal SSD, you’ll have external storage for your backward compatible games sooner rather than later.
