Google dedicated this Tuesday, November 21 its traditional doodle al doctor Victor Chang, pioneer of the surgery modern one heart transplant.
Chang, Australian Chinese surgeon, was born on a day like today in Shanghai in 1936. When he was a child, his mother suffered from breast cancer, which years later gave rise to his interest in medicine.
He studied that degree at the University of Sydney and became cardiothoracic surgeon at St. Vincent Hospital, that city.
One of his most important contributions to medicine was development of the St. Vincent artificial heart valvewhich stood out from previous models because it was significantly cheaper and hence, accessible worldwide for use in life-saving procedures.
Was Also recognized for having performed the heart transplant on the youngest Australian patient in 1984., Fiona Coote, a 14-year-old teenager. Two years later, the girl received another operation of the same style and is the heart transplant recipient who survived the longest.
He created the Victor Chang Foundation in 1984, which provides scholarships for surgeons from Southeast Asia to bring them to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney and train them in advanced cardiac surgery, particularly heart transplants. It also awards grants to programs that explore innovation in cardiac surgery.
In 1986 got Australia’s highest honour: Companion of the Order of Australia.
He died on July 4, 1991 in Mosman, Australia. murdered in an extortion attempt. His crime shocked the oceanic country. In 2000 he was recognized as the “Australian of the Century”.
