US government securities watchdog spoofed by investment scammers – don’t fall for it! – Naked Security

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued several warnings over the years about scammers trying to adopt the identities of SEC officials, including by phone call spoofing.

Call poofing is where a scammer calls you on your landline or cell phone, claims to be from organization X and then reassures you by saying: “If you do not believe me, check the number I am calling from.”

See and see when you do show number (as it is known in North America) or Call number (CLI, a term used elsewhere in the world) says the call comes from X’s official number.

Proof… except it’s not!

The problem here is that the jargon is expression show number and CLI are incorrect designations because the technology does not identify the caller himself or the telephone line used by the caller.
