Mac image editing favorite Pixelmator Pro has launched version 3.0, bringing with it Machine Learning-based tools for trying out variations of designs.

Pixelmator regularly releases new features every few months, but now it’s released its first major release since 2020’s Pixelmator Pro 2.0. Central to the new Pixelmator Pro 3.0 is the concept of design templates, but more active than a simple collection of well-crafted images.

“The easy-to-use design templates in Pixelmator Pro let absolutely anyone create amazing images in an instant,” said Simonas Bastys, Lead Developer at Pixelmator Team. “And with a number of beautiful, fully customizable models also included in today’s update, users can immediately see those designs come to life right in Pixelmator Pro.”

There are currently over 200 ready-made Pixelmator Pro documents, ranging from posters to images to social media. In addition to these prepared designs, each element can be adjusted separately to fit.

More than allowing manual editing of different image layers, colors or fonts, each template contains different options. The company says each template comes with a “range of built-in effects, illustrations, shapes and more.”

So a design that comes with e.g. a green background, also includes an on-screen control for users to change it to a different shade or color. It’s more limited than just allowing any change, every color offered works with the template’s design.

The same idea of an initial design that users can then tweak is also part of the app’s 16 fully customizable mockups. Again, on-screen controls allow a user to quickly adjust complex functions, such as lighting effects.

You can take a Pixelmator Pro mockup, change the images — and adjust the lighting

A feature called Smart Replace allows a user to swap an image that is in the design with any other image they have. For example, if this design has a subject against a specific template design, Pixelmator Pro 3.0 will automatically remove a background from the new image so that the subject fits in seamlessly.

The new Pixelmator Pro 3.0 is now available in the App Store. The update will be free for existing users, and new users can purchase it for $39.99.
