Market your subscriptions with offer codes – Discover

You can now create and distribute subscription offer codes for your apps, giving you new ways to market your subscription. These single-use alphanumeric codes can be redeemed in the App Store or in your app. You can also create unique URLs associated with a promotional code and distribute them using your choice of channels.

Offer codes can help you acquire, retain and win back people by letting them experience your subscription at a free or reduced price for a specified duration. At the end of the offer period, the subscription is automatically renewed at the standard price, unless a subscriber cancels it or deactivates automatic renewal.

Offer codes can be used in many different ways. For example, you can:

  • Send an email with the latest features, recently added content and a promotional code to current or expired subscribers so they can experience your service for a limited time.
  • Distribute flyers that contain unique promo codes to promote your service to event attendees.
  • Partner with another company on a marketing initiative or campaign to help promote your app.
  • Give a subscriber an offer code with a customer service issue to compensate for the issue and encourage retention.
  • Distribute promotional codes within an app that you are sunset as a way to transfer subscribers to your new app and promote your service.

You can provide several types of deals to people depending on your business goals. To determine which type may be best for a particular use case, consider the intended use, customer eligibility, redemption limits, and other criteria of each offer.

Configure and create quote codes

You can create new offer codes in the App Store Connect. When creating a new code, you must also determine if the customer is qualified: Is this for a new, existing or expired subscriber?

If you create a code for a new subscriber, you will also decide if the code is valid in addition to any introductory offers you may provide in your app.

As with other subscription offers in your app, you can choose whether the offer is free, pay on the go or pay in advance.

You can configure offer codes in the App Store Connect.  In the offer codes section you can see your active and inactive offers as well as the number of codes you have available to create.

Once you have configured your offer, you can create and download codes. You can create up to 150,000 new codes every quarter per year. App.

Note: Codes expire a maximum of six months from the creation date, so be aware of how many codes you create at any given time to ensure you have enough valid codes to last the duration of the campaign.

Once you have downloaded your codes, you can use the URL in the App Store Connect and create associated one-time code solution URLs. You will need to copy the URL from the quote information page and then add the specific code to the end of the URL as follows:

Customers can only redeem one code per. Active offer, but may be eligible to redeem multiple offer codes for a single subscription, depending on your configuration choices.

Before creating any quote codes, be sure to configure your server to validate receipts so that you can provide service properly. You can also enable App Store server notifications to understand subscription updates and real-time status changes.

Distribute offer codes

You can distribute quote codes no matter what you choose. Consider which channels are most effective in reaching your intended customers. You can e.g. Distribute URL redemption URLs in digital marketing channels, e.g. Your email distribution lists or text messages. You may share printed promo codes at events or even when purchasing a physical product.

When distributing offer codes, note any qualification or availability limits as well as the expiration date of the code. If you share offer codes with existing customers, make sure the offer is a subscription within the same subscription group as their existing subscription.

Redeem offer codes

In order for customers to redeem an offer code, your app must be in Ready for Sale mode in the App Store Connect. Customers on iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 and later can redeem promotional codes by entering them on the “Redeem Gift Card or Code” page in their App Store account settings or directly in your app, if you have implemented presentCodeRedemptionSheet API. Additionally, if you have created and shared URLs to redeem one-time codes, customers can redeem quote codes using this link.

Apple handles the redemption experience, which includes an offer information screen with the app icon, subscription name, duration and prices; if you have previously added a promotional purchase in the app to the subscription, this will appear instead of your app icon.

You can customize each of these details in the App Store Connect. To help people make an informed decision, make sure they clearly describe your subscription. If a customer tries to redeem your code but does not have your app installed, they can download it during the redemption experience.

If you choose to support redemption in the app, you can consider adding a way to enter an offer code at relevant moments in the user experience-e.g. Add a “Redeem Code” link on your subscription payment screen or in your app’s settings screen.

When a user redeems an offer, provide a relevant experience based on their subscription mode. For example, for a first-time subscriber, you can highlight the benefits of your subscription and provide onboarding. If your app includes account creation or requires acceptance of additional terms, make this process as hassle-free as possible for customers who have redeemed a code and are new to your app.
