JioCinema will reportedly start charging its users post the end of the TATA IPL 2023. The streaming platform will add more than 100 movies and TV series to its platform to take on Netflix, Disney Plus Hotstar, and other streaming platforms. However, the content will be paid to watch, per Reliance’s media and content business President Jyoti Deshpande. In an interview with Bloomberg, Deshpande said that the expansion will coincide with JioCinema starting to charge for content. That said, IPL live streaming will continue to be free regardless of the expansion plan.
The company is yet to finalise the Jio Cinema plans; however, Deshpande mentioned “both price and content are at the front of mind in JioCinema’s expansion.” She also said that at present, the digital streaming space is being majorly controlled and influenced by content from the West. “Jio Studios wants to become a catalyst for cross-pollination of talent. We want to get as Indian as it can,” she added.
The reason why the price is a major factor here is that India is a price-conscious market that forced Netflix to cut its subscription prices in order to make a way for itself in the Indian market. Many regional OTTs are also attracting a good subscriber base these days due to the engagement of those viewers who like local cinema.
The new movies and TV series to its will be made available on Jio Cinema before the end of the IPL on May 28th. Until then, Jio Cinema will be for all users across India for IPL live streaming, as well as its shows and movies. JioCinema’s goal is to keep tariffs simple for viewers and to offer content that is as Indian as possible.
