ILT Vs. VILT Training Methods

How instructional designers use ILT and VILT

When developing organizational programs for employee training and development and leadership training, organizations must weigh the choice between using ILT, Instructor-Led Training, or VILT, Virtual Instructor-Led Training. Both modalities are beneficial in creating engaging training programs. However, they also require adaptations to ensure effectiveness. It is essential for instructors to create an environment that supports and guides employees to the desired goal in an authentic way.

Advantages and disadvantages of ILT in employee training programs

ILT has the added benefit of supporting the development of crucial relationships with employees during training and development and allows for immediate feedback on whether the training is effective. Discourse is an important aspect of training. Creating an atmosphere of communication is essential for leadership training and development. Through this discourse, employees can connect with each other and gain insight into different positions throughout the organization.

A disadvantage of ILT is the removal of employees from their duties during training. Despite employee training and development being essential for growth and success in an organization, it is also important to have employees present and productive in their tasks. If organizations choose this route for employee training and development and management training, then the training plans should be staggered. Allowing some employees and managers to develop through training ensures that some employees and managers ensure productivity. According to ATD’s Handbook for Training and Talent DevelopmentILT can be implemented quickly, but also entails improved logistics, time-consuming resources and an expensive price.

That said, ILT is an important means of providing personalized coaching and support that engages students and provides an effective, experiential training program.

How VILT can be used effectively for training

VILT is an excellent modality for employee training and development and leadership training because of the flexibility it allows. VILT can create an environment where an employee can learn according to their own learning style, which can be difficult to implement under ILT. When using VILT, the training can take place through pre-recorded videos, which creates the opportunity for employees to learn on their own. In addition to learning, employees must still perform their duties at work.

The cognitive load theory is a widely used learning theory aimed at Instructional Design with the belief that people only have so much mental capacity and that gets drained for tasks during the day. If employees are being trained with little mental capacity left, then the training and development of these employees will not be as effective. Although VILT removes the relationship aspect from the equation, it allows employees to learn when their mental reserve is higher. VILT also does not allow instant feedback; however, it can help to supplement the practical training, where further discussions can be taken. VILT must be able to provide an instructor who is available during different hours to ensure the success of employees as they progress through the training program. Organizations must also be aware of any technical issues that may arise during training if they use VILT. Technical issues are common but should not be a major obstacle to training and development.

If technical issues are a consideration for your organization, it may be worthwhile to invest in this area, as eLearning and blended capabilities can be a smart opportunity to develop reusable content. Every time you develop playable or reusable content, you increase the scale and return on your investment.

The truth is that both modalities are excellent choices and the final decision should be based on the needs of the organization. Your team may choose to use a needs analysis, performance mapping and other pre-design methods to determine the best balance between ILT and VILT in your training.

Of course, employee training and development and leadership development can be daunting because of the amount of planning and money it can cost. However, this investment can help an organization stand the test of time.
