How to copy your Photos library from one Mac to another

The Photos app on Mac is one of the most popular features of macOS Monterey. This is where your beloved memories are stored in image and video formats. When the time comes, you can move your photos from one Mac to another. How you do this depends on whether you use iCloud Photos. The steps below work on all the best Macs.

Transfer with AirDrop

The fastest way to transfer one small number of photos or videos from the Photos app to another Mac is using AirDrop. This assumes that both machines are close enough together to use Bluetooth LE.

How to get started:

  1. open Photos app on your Mac from either the Applications folder or the Mac Dock.
  2. choose photos you want to send to a new Mac.

  3. click on Share sheet icon upper right.
  4. choose AirDrop from the drop-down menu.
  5. Confirm transfer on it Other things Mac.

    To transfer photos from the Photos app to another Mac, click the Share Sheet icon and then select AirDrop.  Confirm the transfer on the other Mac.

Using Mac Migration Assistant

If you want to transfer your entire photo library from one Mac to another, you can do so using the Mac Migration Assistant.

Before starting, make sure that both machines meet the following requirements:

  1. Upgrade both Macs to latest macOS version.
  2. Make sure both machines are on same Wi-Fi network.
  3. On your old Mac, choose Apple menu top left.

    To use Mac Migration Assistant, make sure both machines are on the same Wi-Fi network.  On your old Mac, select the Apple menu.

  4. choose System preferences from the drop-down menu.
  5. click Sharing.
  6. Make sure that a name appears in the Computer Name field.

  7. Follow the instructions in Mac Migration Assistant.

With iCloud Photos

Find the easiest way to transfer photos from one Mac to another using iCloud Photos. During the Mac setup process, you will be prompted to sign in to your Apple ID. When you do, your Mac automatically syncs with your iCloud content.

To verify that iCloud photos are synced:

  1. On your new Mac, select Apple menu top left.
  2. choose System preferences from the drop-down menu.
  3. click Apple ID on the top.

    To confirm that your new Mac is using iCloud, select the Apple menu at the top left.  Then select System Preferences, and then click Apple ID.

  4. click iCloud on the left side.
  5. Check if necessary Picture box to the right. Once checked, the Mac will start syncing your photos from iCloud.

It’s always a good idea to delete content you no longer need before moving your photos from one Mac to another from the Photos app. Yes, this can be a tedious process, depending on how many photos you have. However, it’s always nice to start fresh on a new Mac. A smaller photo library also means that it is so much faster to transfer the content.
