A Southern California family — including an elderly woman and two children — was tied up and held at gunpoint by masked intruders this week in a terrifying home invasion, authorities said.
The horror unfolded at around 10.40pm on Monday when a woman called 999 and whispered that she needed help at a home in Westminster. KTLA reported this.
When authorities arrived on the scene, they saw four masked male suspects running from the house with handguns, the newspaper said.
Danny Sommay, 29, from Banning, was arrested at the scene, while the three other alleged perpetrators are still on the run.
Inside the home, police found an adult man, an adult woman and an older woman, along with a 14-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl, KTLA said.
The suspects entered the home and used a stun gun to knock the adult man to the ground, the victims said.
The man, two children and the elderly woman were tied up while the perpetrators searched the room for valuables.
One image released by westminster police and distributed by CBS It appears that two of the suspects gestured for the residents to sit on the living room floor.
The adult woman was able to hide in a closet and alert police, KTLA said, citing a release from Westminster police.
Within minutes, the family’s palm-tree-lined suburban street was lined with police cars and crime scene tape, according to photos obtained by KTLA.
A Huntington Beach Police helicopter was initially dispatched to search for the three remaining suspects, but turned up no significant leads, the outlet reported.
Sommay was booked into the Orange County Jail on charges of kidnapping, robbery, burglary, conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of a loaded and stolen firearm and armed criminal action.
At the time of his arrest, he was armed with a loaded 9mm handgun that had been reported stolen, police told the newspaper.
Sommay tried to hide the weapon by throwing it over a brick wall, but it was recovered by authorities.
Westminster police could not immediately be reached to answer questions about the case, including the search for the three suspects who are still on the run.
As of Wednesday morning, Sommay’s bond has been set at $1,000,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court later today, according to jail records.
