Provided that its successor actually arrives with such a biometric sensor, Samsung has every right in the world to beat itself in the chest and claim the first place, as no other foldable phone has so far arrived with a fingerprint scanner under the screen, let alone a double-sided sensor.
Although the Galaxy Z Fold 3 did not arrive with a fingerprint scanner under the screen, the Galaxy S Fold 4 may arrive next year with a rather exciting fingerprint sensor. According to a patent application discovered by LetsGoDigital, the upcoming Z Fold 4 may use a double-sided fingerprint sensor located between the front screen and the main screen.
This has so far never been done on a folding phone and unlocks a rather interesting use case.
The rumor of two-sided sensor allows the user to unlock the device by entering their digit on either the external or internal display. Due to the location of the sensors, they communicate with essentially the same circuit board on the phone’s motherboard, which will definitely help save some precious internal space. SamMobile points out that Samsung could go for any combination of ultrasonic and optical sensors, but neither the patent application nor other rumors confirm that view.
With this new implementation, users will be able to approve payments, unlock the device and approve locked apps, no matter what screen they are currently on. While Galaxy Z Fold 3’s fast capacitive fingerprint scanner is as good as it gets and works well no matter what screen you use, Z Fold 3 definitely lacks the novelty of a fingerprint scanner below the screen.
We have so far heard little about the Galaxy Z Fold 4, which is due to the expected release of the phone in August 2022. There is plenty of time until then and the rumor mill has not started rotating at full speed yet. Still, we expect top-notch hardware and an enhanced selfie camera below the display.
