Neil Lennon says Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea should have signed Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk amid their heavy transfer spending.
The duo wouldn’t have fitted into the criteria of the £1bn Chelsea have spent under Todd Boehly because they are 30 and 32, respectively.
But given the struggles of Chelsea after spending so much on young players, ex-Celtic star Neil Lennon thinks that money should have gone on Manchester City’s Treble-winner Ederson and Liverpool’s ice-cool defender, Virgil van Dijk, instead, as he told PLZ Soccer.
As of this moment, those near-ten-year contracts that have been handed out to the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk is making of painful viewing.
But that’s where patience is needed because these players need development and time to grow. Todd Boehly’s problem is that modern-day Chelsea isn’t built like that.
Either way, even if they went down the road of Virgil van Dijk and Ederson, they never would have got them because of who they are playing for.

Virgil van Dijk and Ederson at Chelsea
“Ederson, I would have signed him,” said Lennon. “If you have got a £1bn to spend, then Harry Kane. No-brainer.
“You look at Chelsea, at the minute, they aren’t scoring any goals. Lost at home to Nottingham Forest, then to Bournemouth and again at the weekend. They aren’t scoring any goals and goalscorers are the premium.
“If you are really serious about something. Listen, Jackson is a good player. Sterling is a good player. But you want the top-end goalscorers because they are the ones who make the difference.
“At centre-half, you have got Thiago. He is still playing great. Who is the best centre-half out there? You know van Dijk, somebody like that.”

Pressure on Mauricio Pochettino
Welcome to the big time, Mauricio. He would have felt the heat in France, but at the end of the day, every manager wins the league with PSG and no one can help them win the Champions League.
At Tottenham, there wasn’t the pressure that is on Chelsea now, so Pochettino will be feeling the heat.
The problem is, these Chelsea fans have been used to ruthless calls, correct calls and trophies. And it’s going to be interesting to see how they react if results continue as they are.
