The Hague, Nov 20 (EFE).- Dutch politician Thierry Baudet, who leads the far-right party Forum for Democracy (FvD), has been hit on the head in a cafeteria in the north of the Netherlands during an event campaign for the general elections that will be held next Wednesday.
The far-right was hit several times with a beer bottle during an electoral event in the city of Groningen, in the north of the country, where he was with other FvD candidates and deputies, as can be seen in images of the attack and reports the political party in social network X.
“Thierry is heading to UMCG (Groningen university hospital) after being attacked again at an event. It seems like everything will be fine. Baudet has been treated by a traumatologist. They hit him on the back of the head with a beer bottle and also on the edge of his temple, right next to his eye. A security guard also suffered facial injuries,” the party said in a brief explanation.
A suspect has already been arrested and is being questioned by police officers in Groningen.
It is the second time in a very short time that Baudet has been attacked during an event: almost a month ago, an unknown person hit him on the head with an umbrella during a visit to Ghent University, in Belgium, and he suffered a mild concussion. which forced him to stop his campaign for a few days.
This political party had another electoral event planned in the city of Zwolle, but has canceled it “due to the health and safety” of Baudet.
As was the case when he was attacked in Belgium, Dutch political leaders of all ideologies condemned what happened.
“It is totally unacceptable that Thierry Baudet has been attacked again. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again now: stay away from politicians. Always. I wish him a lot of strength and recovery,” said acting Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
Frans Timmermans, leader of the left-wing social democratic bloc PvdA and the greens GroenLinks, warned that “violence is always unacceptable, and in a democracy it is discussed using words, this attack has no justification.”
Liberal candidate Dilan Yeşilgöz (VVD) urged “to keep your hands off the representatives of the people: you can disagree with someone, but you do it with words, you never attack.”
The Christian Democrat Pieter Omtzigt stressed that it is “absolutely and completely unacceptable to physically attack and harm Baudet, this hits democracy hard,” and regretted that “it seems that nothing has been learned from 2002 and Pim Fortuyn.”
